Our Approach to Mathematics
Building Strong Foundations
Every child’s journey in mathematics begins with a focus on number sense, place value, and problem solving. Through hands-on experiences, games, and real-world applications, students discover how mathematics connects to their daily lives. These foundations are continually revisited and extended as students grow, ensuring that learning is both meaningful and lasting.
Assessment & Personalised Learning
We recognise that every learner’s pathway in mathematics is unique. Teachers use a range of assessments, including Essential Assessment, to identify each student’s strengths and areas for growth. This data allows us to set clear learning goals and tailor instruction to meet the needs of every child. Parents can feel confident that their child is supported to progress at their own pace while being challenged to extend their thinking.
Daily Practice & Fluency
Fluency in mathematics comes from regular practice and review. Each lesson begins with Daily Review activities and Fluency Workshops, where students strengthen their recall of essential facts and strategies. This daily rehearsal ensures that key knowledge becomes automatic, freeing students to focus on solving more complex problems with confidence.
Explicit Teaching & Problem Solving
Following fluency practice, teachers introduce new mathematical concepts through explicit instruction. Lessons are carefully sequenced, breaking down concepts step by step while allowing students to ask questions and explore ideas. Students then apply their learning to rich problem-solving tasks that encourage creativity, reasoning, and collaboration.
